Benefits of BowlsBowls is a fantastic way to meet friendly, like-minded people while enjoying a fun and engaging sport. It is also a great fresh-air outside activity that’s accessible to all levels of fitness. Socially, it is a highly inclusive sport, bringing together players from all ages and backgrounds. For younger players, bowls helps build focus, strategic thinking, and patience—skills that are invaluable both on and off the green. The game involves careful planning, an understanding of angles, and precise control, making it a great way to develop mental discipline and tactical skills and to engage with older experienced players. For our more mature members, bowls has a surprising number of health benefits. The game involves continuous walking across the green, which provides gentle cardiovascular exercise that supports heart health. The bending and stretching motions required to roll the bowls, strengthen the core and lower body, improving muscle tone and flexibility in the legs, hips, and back. Balance and coordination can be improved significantly through regular play, as the game requires precise movements and stable posture when delivering the bowl. These physical demands help build stronger stabilizing muscles, reducing the risk of falls and improving overall mobility. Alongside the playing section our social section is a great way to meet people and have fun, with events held at the club on most weekends, throughout the year.
What’s InvolvedThe playing season runs from April through to October.Every week there are coaching sessions with experienced players on hand to provide guidance and tipsOne of the best parts of joining our club is the chance to participate in our friendly yet competitive matches. Our Ladies, Gents and Seniors sections all compete in leagues, in the Edinburgh area throughout the season. For those who enjoy a bit of competition, the league games can offer an exciting blend of intensity and enjoyment that keeps players coming back. Our own internal club competitions and tounraments are well structured, challenging, and rewarding. Whether you’re competing in a singles match or teaming up for doubles, there’s always a thrill in aiming for precision and outplaying your opponents. What makes bowls competitions special is the unique combination of focus and camaraderie. The games are serious, with players strategizing to improve their skills and work toward winning, but the atmosphere remains supportive and light-hearted. Our players value sportsmanship and encourage each other, so even in the heat of competition, there’s a spirit of friendship and mutual respect.Younger and newer players can jump right into the competitive spirit, while learning from more experienced members. It’s a great way to improve quickly, gain confidence, and experience the excitement of a well-played match.
